So i think i use a lotta keyboard shortcuts and am fond of them. I started learning them to look like a ‘pro’ but now I do it because it accelerates my workflow. This piece will go into shortcuts I use for my most used apps and thats: the browser shortcuts, youtube shortcuts, gmail shortcuts, and some webstorm/jetbrains IDE shortcuts.
I think whats improved my workflow the most has been learning browser shortcuts. Since I spend so much time on the browser I tried really hard to learn some of its shortcuts. And it actually saves a bit of time. Opening a new tab, going to the search bar are really tedious to do with your mouse and way faster with your keyboard. Anyways … lets start this.
Also i use a mac so some shortcuts might only work for mac and some keys might have to be translated for windows machines.
Brave/Chrome shortcuts
⌘+t
: open a new tab (pretty simple, most people know it)
⌘+1
: move to the first tab
⌘+9
: move to the last opened tab
⌘+shift+a
: search tabs (this ones cool and have to make a habit of using it more)
⌘+n
: for a new chrome window
⌘+l
: directly go to the search bar (this is really handy as well)
⌘+]
: browser front
⌘+[
: browser back
⌘+shift+] OR ⌘+⌥+→
: move to the right tab
⌘+shift+[ OR ⌘+⌥+←
: move to the left tab
⌘+,
: settings
Youtube shortcuts
i
: to open the mini player
0-9
: to quickly move between segments of videos. so 0 is start, 1: is 10% of the video, 9 is 90% of the video
/
: go to the youtube search bar
c
: captions
k
: play/pause
space
: most people confuse this, so space is not actually to pause its to toggle the last setting you were messing around with. which is why sometimes space triggers the captions.
Gmail shortcuts
gmail shortcuts are so underrated. they save so much time. To use them though, you need enable shortcuts in your settings first.
gi
: go to inbox
c
: compose
shift+*+u
: select all unread
shift+*+i
: mark all as read (this in conjunction with the upper command and making your view as unread first saves all the time2 of clicking into emails just to mark them as read. Also helps with housekeeping and keeping your unread to 0)
/
: go to the search bar
j
: to move down emails
k
: to move up emails
o
: open emails
Webstorm/Jetbrains IDE shortcuts
I’ll just list my most used since shortcuts here amount to the number stars in the universe.
⌘+shift+e
: search recent files
⌘+shift+o
: search all files
⌘+[
: go back to where cursor was previously
⌘+1
: to open the file explorer
F1+⌥
: locate the open file in the explorer
⌘+shift+a
: actions, open up actions and you can get most keyboard shortcuts from here
⌘+shift+]
: move between open files: move the right opened file
⌘+ꜛ
: go up one level and look at the files there
F12+⌥
: open up terminal
shift+esc
: to close anything
also zen mode is so underrated. Its very peaceful and almost hard to code without it for me. But you do need to learn a bit of the shortcuts cause everything disappears when you use it.
Extras
⌘+space : open spotlight/search on mac : mac machine
⌘+` : to switch between chrome windows (only works if the windows are on the same desktop) : browser
⌘+shift+m
: switch between accounts (i use this a lot if you configure your browser to have multiple accounts [ie. one for work, one personal etc.] this makes it really easy to switch context) : browser
